For Anna Celeste Burke life is an extravaganza! Figuring out how to hang tough and make the most of the wild ride is the challenge. On my way to Oahu, to join the rock musician and high school drop-out I had married in Tijuana, I was nabbed as a runaway. Eventually, the police let me go, but the rock band broke up. Our next stop: Disney World, where we ‘worked for the Mouse’ as chefs, courtesy of Walt Disney World University Chef’s School training. More education landed us in academia at The Ohio State University. For decades, I researched, wrote, and taught a number of gloriously nerdy topics. Retired now, I’m still married to the same, sweet, guy and live with him near Palm Springs, California. I write mysteries set in sunny California! The Jessica Huntington Desert Cities Mystery series, set here in the Coachella Valley, the Corsario Cove Cozy Mystery Series set in California’s Central Coast, and The Georgie Shaw Cozy Mystery series set in the OC. Coming soon, The Misadventures of Betsy Stark that also take place, here, in the Coachella Valley.
Mary Crawford has been lucky enough to live her own version of a romance novel. She married the guy who kissed her at summer camp. He told her on the night they met that he was going to marry her and be the father of their children. Eventually she stopped giggling when he said it, and they just celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary. They have two children. The oldest is in medical school, where he recently found and married the love of his life, and the youngest is still in elementary school.
Ms. Crawford writes full time now. She has published six books and has several more underway. She volunteers her time to a variety of causes and has worked as a Civil Rights Attorney and diversity advocate. Ms. Crawford spent several years working for various social service agencies before becoming an attorney. In her spare time, she loved to cook, decorate cakes and of course, obsessively, compulsively read.

Allyson R. Abbott.
I love to travel, but I also need to work. Being an author allows me to combine both of activities and has the added bonus of life being an adventure. I never know where I will be sitting writing from one year to the next. As I write this, I am in Africa, in spring I travel to Europe for a few months and later in the year to the USA and Canada. It is a great life, if you don’t mind a little insecurity.
I try to bring a little of my adventurous personality into my stories. Being a 'mature aging gracefully' woman, I feel akin to the problems of aging and relationships. I spent many years on my own before finding my truly remarkable and very patient partner who I happily gave up my whole world for. My stories are about mature relationships with mature people. People who have character and humour, who have a history; people just like us.

AN INTERVIEW WITH Adrienne Ruvalcaba

One of the Authors FROM
MOTHER’S DAY MAGIC
My kids say I'm awesome

The Story I’ve Contributed Is
the day before eclosion
Sharon's only daughter, Gracie, is ready to move out on her own. What should be and exciting transition is complicated by Gracie's disability. Can Sharon learn to accept Gracie's newfound need for autonomy before irreparable damage is done to their relationship? The Day Before Eclosion is the story of a mother's struggle to respect her daughter's need for independence at the most crucial time of her young life.
Teaser from The Day Before Eclosion
Sharon had no idea how to reason with her daughter on this matter. How could she tell her that an ability to perform the practical tasks associated with daily living did not mean that she had the cognitive ability to meaningfully engage in complex emotional relationships? How could she even begin to go about explaining such a thing? Gracie probably had no concept of the idea that a young man could want to pay attention to her for the sole purpose of sleeping with her and then moving on to the next girl before things got too serious. Gracie equated feelings of love and attraction with marriage and stability, not with dating and having fun as other people her age did.
Carefully, Sharon approached Gracie and sat next to her on the picnic bench. "He'll never marry me now," Gracie said in a whisper that broke Sharon's heart.
She refrained from telling her daughter that twenty-two year old college boys rarely ever had marriage on their minds when they kissed girls.
After Martin returned home, he managed to convince Gracie to spend the night in her old bedroom. The happy, smiling young woman who had helped with dinner multiple times over the last few weeks had been replaced by a sullen, heartbroken person whom Sharon did not recognize. The niggling feeling that she might have done something wrong tickled at the fringes of her consciousness as she went through her entire night time routine. It wasn't until she got in bed and turned out the lights that the magnitude of her actions fully occurred to her.
The next morning, she padded out to the living room to find that Gracie was gone. Before leaving, she had taken the time to write a note and leave it taped to Sharon's computer screen.
"I am HUMILEATED!" the note read.
Sharon's eyes skimmed over the misspelled word several times before she broke down in tears. What had she done?
What Was The Inspiration For Your Mother’s Day Magic Story?
The inspiration for The DAy before eclosion came directly from one of my best friends. years ago, she and her husband adopted two special needs children who have enriched their lives as much as they have challenged them. My story is a huge departure from their reality, because it makes a leap into the future. The children who inspired this story are still young, so it is really a tale of one of the many scenarios that could happen down the road.

How much research was involved in writing your story? How did you go about it?
Since I have a close, personal relationship with the inspiration behind this story, I feel like I have done years of research simply by being a friend and listening. When I was first invited to participate in this anthology, i knew that I would write a story that was a tribute to my friend and mothers like her. she and her husband willingly took on the adoption of the two kids in their area who most needed a home. i've seen first-hand how stressful the process has been at times, so I wanted my story to depict both the stresses and the joys. I tried to inject some genuine emotion and real mistakes into this story.

How often do your characters surprise you by doing or saying something totally unexpected?
My characters rarely every surprise me. i usually plan my stories out in detail, but i can have the occasional "ninjas fell from the sky" moment. In this story, my characters pretty much did what I expected them to do. Sharon, the involved worrywart mother, does do something that most of us won't approve of, but I understand her motivation.
Do you miss spending time with your characters when you finish writing this story?
Yes. I am actually considering expanding this story into a longer novella at some point in the future. i'd love to more fully explore the dynamics of gracie's budding relationship.
What writer has been your biggest inspiration?
My inspiration changes periodically. At the moment, I am inspired by several authors within the interracial romance genre. the genre is overflowing with self-published books, many of which are low quality and help to perpetuate harmful stereotypes about women of color. i want to see the genre flourish, so i am inspired by the talented authors who have been there since the beginning, putting out quality literature.
What non-writer had the most influence on your life And why?
I have been fortunate to know lots of influential people in my life. it is hard to pick just one, but I have to choose a family member who served twenty years in the Us navy. My aunt, karen earlene lara, was my inspiration for joining the military and changing the course of my life. If not for her influence, i may never have found the courage to go after my dreams. She is also one of the most encouraging people I have ever known. She is always the first to order and review my books.

How important is the choosing of character names to you? Have you ever decided on a name and then changed it because it wasn’t right for the character?
character names do not mean anything to me while i'm working on a first draft. sometimes i use brackets with the word name inside them, like this [name]. often, i pick the first name that comes to mind and I stick with it. someday I'll put more thought into it.
Do you allow others to read your work in progress, or do you keep it a secret until you’ve finished your first draft?
my first draft is usually for me only.
What inspired you to write your first book?
I was in an abusive marriage while writing my first book, The officer's wife. I just wanted to escape reality.
What might we be surprised to know about you?
the most surprising thing about me is that i have dyslexia. reading and writing is difficult. it takes me a long time, but it's worth it to me.
In Addition
i would like to dedicate the story to the greatest mother i know. Marisa, you have been an inspiration and a best friend to me.
