Connor~Dormaine G

An Interview with Dormaine G

What is your most interesting or craziest writing quirk?
For some odd reason I need to clean my house before I write. It’s like my writing ritual. Afterwards can settle in to write.
What has been your favorite book to write?
Connor - book 1. Simply because it’s my first book and I like the main character’s sassiness. Plus it’s a science fiction novel involving another language, supernatural beings and includes another planet.
Which character has been your favorite?
That is hard but I would have to say Connor. She has a little bit of me in her. It’s the unyielding wittiness and relentless sarcasm. Sometimes, like her, my filter forgets to stay on.
What advice would you give new/up and coming writers?
Grow a thick skin. If others do not care for you work that is all right, not everyone will. As long as it is a well written, be proud of your work. Also, write for yourself. If it’s a great story that you would enjoy reading then others will like it as well.
Which writers inspire you?
There have been a few authors that have influenced my life such as James Patterson, Kelley Armstrong, Octavia Butler and Gwen Hunter which are just a few.
What genre are your books?
I started off with young adult, since that is my favorite love, but wound up writing horror. I have always liked being scared and writing in that genre felt natural. Of course I had to try my hand at mystery and just recently dove into romance but I think that is my limit with genre exploration.

Anything else you would like to say about writing? Encouraging words for potential writers?
Take a chance and take the plunge if this is something that you truly want to do. Surround yourself with like minded authors who will encourage you to keep moving forward.

Book Description:
Strong. Sassy. Superhuman.
Connor's mundane teenager life takes a U-turn when she discovers her incredible abilities, and a whole new world opens up around her. Thrilled by her newfound powers, she soon realizes that being special often means being singled out - and not always by those with good intentions.
With a group of friends who share similar abilities, Connor is set on a path of discovery and adventure as they try to find out more about their true self and origin. They soon find themselves pursued by Ronin; young, smart and out for revenge against them for reasons unknown.
The first novel in Dormaine G's young adult fantasy series, Connor is a witty, intense read and an exciting debut.

A Do Not Disturb sign hung from the door handle. Cute. I walked in to waste more time and see how they decorated this room. The walls covered with wallpaper were of different sports memorabilia. It seemed like a typical boy’s room with trophies, sports equipment, and toy model airplanes hanging from the ceiling.
Wait a minute. I looked back at the trophies, checking the nameplates; they didn’t have names on any of them.
I heard a scraping noise by the hallway, so I quickly turned around but, once again, saw nothing. Either I’m losing my mind or just paranoid. At least that’s what I thought until I noticed the Do Not Disturb sign swinging back and forth from the doorknob.
Someone is in this house with us, worse yet, in this room with me now. I heard nothing nor did I see anyone, but I sensed it, and it was not a welcoming feeling.
I had my hands up, braced for anything that came at me. I slowly eased my way back across the room, my back close to the wall, inching toward the door, breath on hold. As soon as both feet touched the hallway, the door slammed shut behind me, and all the lights in the house died.
In total darkness, I jetted full speed in the hall and down the stairs, and then swung open the basement door, popping the hinges, the whole time sensing someone near me.
What were we thinking breaking into this house? We clearly did not think this through.
I pulled on the statue opening the door to the room. Tony was the first one out, with Byron a close second, both asking what gives.
Out of breath, I told them to wrap it up now, but they stood there looking bewildered.

“Now! We have company, and we are not welcomed.” I then pulled on the statue to shut the door, not waiting around. They quickly wrapped it up and hurried out as the door was closing in on them. They followed suit, running after me, no questions asked, the whole time still sensing something near me.
